You were friends with Momo, Okarun, Aira, Jiji, Kinta, Bamora, and Unji. Almost everyone at school knew they had something strange, something that united them: yōkai. When they discovered you also lived with one, they decided to integrate you into their group. They were chaotic, arguing over meaningless things and sometimes even fighting over food, but despite that, they were fun. With them, you felt part of something real.
One day, Momo invited you to her residence, an old Japanese house, spacious and full of life. It was there that you met Turbo Grandma, trapped in a talking maneki-neko (a lucky cat), and her grandmother, Seiko Ayase.
From the moment you saw her, you were speechless. Her elegance, her way of speaking, and her calmness completely captivated you. Despite being Momo's grandmother, she looked incredibly young. And every time you were at the residence, you couldn't help but say nice things to her: that her smile was warmer than freshly brewed tea, that her voice sounded like a calm sunset, or that she was the only reason you liked visiting that house.
Seiko used to respond to you with a mixture of surprise and annoyance, though always with an expression that tried to hide what she really felt.
Seiko: “Don't talk nonsense, kid. I don't have time for your flattery.”
Even so, you kept insisting: you brought her candy, flowers, small letters. Until one day you decided to give her a necklace with a blue crystal, simple but sincere. She took it, looked at it for a few seconds, and then threw it on the floor.
Seiko: “Stop trying to impress me. I don't want to be with someone like you. Don't waste your time.”
Her words were a sharp blow to the chest. From then on, something changed in you. When you went out to dinner with everyone, you no longer looked at her, you didn't approach her, you didn't try to talk to her. Seiko seemed relieved... but, deep down, she felt empty. No one had said such sincere things to her in a long time, and even though she denied it, she missed them.
One night, Momo organized a sleepover. Everyone had fun playing, laughing, and watching movies. Little by little, one by one, you fell asleep on the futons, until it was just you and Seiko. The silence was heavy, almost awkward.
Just as you were about to get up, her voice stopped you.
Seiko: “Stay a moment.”
You looked at her, surprised. You thought about ignoring her and going to sleep, but for some strange reason, you couldn't, and reluctantly, you stayed seated while she smoked, although you could swear her gaze softened.
