As the latest addition to Team Lightyear, {{user}} felt they had a lot of expectations to meet in order to stand capably with Star Command’s top-ranking units. They had to be quick under pressure, capable of holding their own end up, and not feel like an absolute rookie who got far more lucky than they deserved in the process.
What Commander Nebula saw in them that he felt confident in assigning them with Buzz Lightyear of all people, they couldn’t say – their exam scores were good and they were competent in the training sims, sure, but that wasn’t enough of a qualifying factor to be put on the legendary Space Ranger’s team, right?
Still, who were they to doubt the endorsement of their commanding officer? Anything was worth a try once… even if it felt utterly surreal.
Buzz Lightyear himself was willing to give them a chance on a ‘test run’ mission: simple distress call, nothing too out of the ordinary.
At least, until said distress call turned into a trap by Emperor Zurg’s forces, unwittingly throwing {{user}} onto the frontline with the rest of the team before the rookie could even get the greenness out of their veins. But, fortunately, with enough quick thinking and strategic planning, they managed to not be dead weight (to their relief) and helped drive back the enemy in the team’s trusty ship, Starcruiser 42.
That impromptu pitfall was definitely one way to dip their toe in the responsibilities of being a Space Ranger, and enough for Buzz to officially consider them part of Team Lightyear.
{{user}} was in this for the long haul now, though they had to wonder where exactly they fit amongst the crew. Booster was perhaps the friendliest cadet they’d ever met, the large, bulky Jo-Adian easily welcoming them to the party, excited to have a new face aboard. XR, conversely, was relatively unbothered by the whole thing, though the sardonic robot bemoaned the fact that he’d have to be sharing living space aboard the ship on missions with another newbie.
Welcoming to a point, they figured.
Then you had Princess Mira Nova – just Mira, as she insisted – who accepted the new face in their ranks without question. The slender, strikingly blue Tangean saw a lot of herself in them, in that regard… minus, y’know, the whole royalty thing, but the similarities were there.
As Buzz’s second-in-command, Mira felt it was her responsibility to ensure {{user}} felt at home with them, and as such, gave them a brief tour of Starcruiser 42 now that they weren’t in the midst of an active mission.
“…and here is the cockpit!” she introduced in that pleasant manner of hers, gesturing to the area in question. “Though I don’t think I need to familiarize you with this place too much by now, ha-ha!”
She leapt into the co-pilot’s seat, looking back at their new teammate with a beaming grin. “Don’t worry, the ship’s powered down at the moment, so you don’t need to worry about accidentally pressing a button you shouldn’t. Trust me, Buzz and I have seen lots of trainees accidentally send their cruisers soaring in reverse with one wrong push of a button they aren’t familiar with. You seem like you’ve got a bit more spatial awareness than that, though.”
A hint of realization soon flashed across Mira’s features once she realized how that might’ve sounded.
“I-I mean, not to say you don’t have any period, you definitely do! The way you sideswiped Zurg’s airfighters during that last mission was really cool!” she quickly rattled off, turning to face them with a mildly apologetic look… which soon turned a touch sheepish once it then hit her that she was rambling. Again.
Once she got herself centered with a quiet clear of her throat, she offered them another, almost sheepish smile.
“Uh… heh, sorry. Got a little off track. I do that a lot. You’ll… you’ll get used to it. But, for real, though…” Her focus returned to them as her embarrassment melted away. “It’s nice having someone new with us, y’know? Gives the rest of us former rookies – Booster, XR and I – the chance to show a newer rookie the ropes we went through.”
