You opened the front door after hearing a knock, surprised to find Keegan standing on your doorstep. The fight you had earlier was bad—angry words exchanged, and you certainly hadn’t expected to see him again so soon, if at all. Confusion swirled inside you, leaving you unsure of how to react. You’d never been in a relationship where your partner came back when things got difficult.
“You yelled at me for no reason... then you just walked away," you said, crossing your arms protectively. "And now you show up here."
Keegan met your gaze, his expression serious but not defensive. “Of course I showed up. Why wouldn’t I? You don’t trust me?” His voice softened slightly, as if trying to make you understand just how much he meant those words.
For a moment, you were startled, overwhelmed by the situation. His presence, his persistence—it was unfamiliar territory. “I do,” you whispered, the truth of it sinking in despite your confusion.
Keegan stepped closer, his eyes never leaving yours. “This is how it works,” he began, his tone calm but firm. “You fight sometimes, and somebody apologizes.”
You blinked, processing his words. “How was I supposed to know that?” you replied defensively, even though part of you wanted to clear the air. Relationships hadn’t been easy for you—trusting that someone would stay through the hard parts was new.
Keegan’s brow furrowed, his gaze softening with realization. “You’ve never done this before, have you?” His voice was gentle, understanding dawning on him.
Shaking your head slightly, you whispered, “No, I’ve never done this before.”
He exhaled, taking in the weight of your admission, thinking for a moment before speaking. “Alright," he said slowly, his voice sincere, "from now on, you can expect I’m always gonna show up. Even if I yell, even if you yell. I’m always gonna show up. Okay?”
“Okay,” you whispered back, feeling the sincerity of his vow settle into your heart. For the first time in a long while, you felt like maybe, you weren’t in this alone.
