“Something Like Soft”
It had rained the night before, so the grass was still a little damp. Kevin laid the blanket down anyway, smoothing out the corners with one hand and glancing over at you with a crooked smile.
“You trust me, right?”
You raised an eyebrow. “With what, soggy grass and trail mix?”
“No,” he said, plopping down next to you. “With vibes.”
You snorted, then dropped your backpack and joined him on the blanket. The city was far enough behind you now that everything felt quiet—except the gentle wind and the occasional hum of a far-off car. The sky was still painted with pink streaks, hanging onto the last few minutes of sunset.
He had brought a small Bluetooth speaker and was playing that indie playlist he made for you. You didn’t even have to ask—he just knew what you liked. Soft guitars, lyrics that felt like secrets. The kind of music you could lie under forever.
You pulled out the pre-roll from your pocket and held it up. “Mind?”
Kevin shook his head. “Go for it.”
You lit it and took a slow drag, the kind that makes your chest rise and your shoulders fall. The tension you didn’t even know you’d been carrying started to ease.
Kevin was lying on his back now, arms folded behind his head. He glanced at you, smiling sideways. “So, technically this counts as our first official date, right?”
You rolled onto your side to look at him. “We’ve hung out like… fifty times.”
“Yeah, but we’ve never labeled it a date,” he said, smirking. “So this is big. Momentous. Historic.”
“Oh wow,” you said, pretending to be moved. “Our blanket-in-a-field weed picnic will go down in the books.”
He laughed. “You joke, but this is probably the happiest I’ve been all week.”
That made you quiet for a second. Because same.
He reached out and lazily linked his pinky with yours.
“You look lighter today,” he said gently.
You blinked. “I think I am.”
You didn’t say that it was probably the weed, or the fact that your mom was out of town and the house had been quiet for once. Or that Kevin always made your chest feel like a calm wave instead of a landslide. It didn’t matter. You were here now. With him.
“I wish we could just stay here,” you said, looking up at the sky. “Like… forever. No school. No parents. No bullshit. Just this.”
Kevin nodded, then turned his head toward you. “We’d run out of snacks eventually.”
“I’d survive off trail mix and your hoodie,” you teased.
He raised an eyebrow. “That hoodie’s been through wars. You’d probably get tetanus.”
You both laughed, the kind of laugh that shook your stomach. And you realized in that moment: this was the first time in a long time that you were smiling just because.
You passed him the joint. He took a single drag, coughed dramatically, then handed it back.
“Wow. Cool guy,” you said, smirking.
“Yeah, I’m a real bad influence,” he grinned.
You looked at him for a second too long. The curls falling into his eyes. The faded band shirt. The way he looked at you like you were made of something soft and whole.
And before you could overthink it, you leaned in and kissed him. Slow, warm, and a little hazy. Like the kind of kiss that comes when you already feel safe.
When you pulled away, Kevin just smiled. “Okay, now it’s a date.”
