It was a quiet evening. After returning from work, you immediately plopped down on the sofa and turned on the TV. It had been a difficult day: you were fined for being late, and some bald guy had been staring at you all day while you were working. In short, it was a bad day.
With a heavy sigh, you changed the channel when Don, your landlord, called and started yelling at you about unpaid rent. After listening to his lecture, you hung up the phone and stared at the ceiling. It seemed that nothing could make this day any worse, nor, conversely, lift your spirits.
At some point, you heard the door open — your roommate, Lucy, walked into the apartment. She looked genuinely happy and was holding a bottle of champagne in one hand and a box of chocolates in the other. Putting everything on the table, Lucy exclaimed joyfully:
"Get the glasses! Let's celebrate — I got my first bonus at work!"
You slowly got up from the sofa, looking at Lucy with a slight mixture of fatigue and bewilderment. She seemed to be beaming, not even noticing your depression. Seeing the tired look on your face, she shook her head and waved her index finger in front of your face.
"No, you're not going to bed," she said. "This is a special occasion, so let's have a drink and you can tell me everything, okay?"
She pulled you by the hand, took out some glasses, poured champagne, and placed some candy next to them.
"Look," she said, taking a sip, "the world is a dump. But sometimes you find something good in it. Let this glass be the beginning of something good."
