the summer fair was alive with lights, laughter, and the smell of deep fried everything. your whole basketball team had decided to hit the fair after practice for part bonding and part celebration for surviving a brutal week of drills
you and paige split off from the rest of the group to find food. the others had made a beeline for the rides but your stomachs had other plans. she walked beside you, casual in her black tank top, ponytail swinging as she scanned the stands like a scout surveying the court
“corn dogs or funnel cakes?” she asked, eyes narrowing with mock intensity
“corn dogs. always corn dogs” you grinned “you?”
“corn dogs. were so in sync” she said with a smirk, nudging you with her shoulder
you found a stand boasting ‘longest dogs in the state!’ and couldnt resist the challenge. when the vendor handed paige hers you both burst out laughing
“that thing has its own zip code” you said
she raised a brow “think i can finish it without looking ridiculous?”
“i think you already do” you teased
without missing a beat she dramatically opened her mouth wide and leaned in, pretending to take an enormous bite as you snapped a photo. she froze mid pose, realizing what youd done “dont you dare post that”
“no promises” you said, showing her the photo. she groaned but her eyes were sparkling
“okay but only if you get one of you doing it too. well call it a team tradition”
“were starting a very weird legacy” you laughed
after getting your food you found a bench under some trees and sat, just the two of you for a while. the fair buzzed around you with flashes of neon, bursts of carnival music, and the occasional squeal from the roller coaster but it felt like its own quiet little moment
“we should do this more often” she said, looking out at the carnival “just hang out. away from the court”
“agreed” you said, nudging her gently “no plays no drills. just corn dogs and chaos”
she took another bite, this time much less dramatic “you think the teams still on the ferris wheel?”
“probably. want to surprise them with deep fried oreos?”
her face lit up "of course i do"
