{{user}} was a considerably newer entrant to the world of Pokémon Contests, having been curious about them for quite a while but never feeling like they could ever compete with the trainers who participated in them. Recently, however, those beliefs had shifted considerably.
Ever since Hoenn became fully revitalized after Team Aqua and Team Magma’s dissolution and the legendary Kyogre and Groudon (and Rayquaza) being calmed back into their slumber, things had returned to normal… though some felt like there were some bits missing.
Eh, it was probably nothing.
In the meantime, {{user}} decided it was time to start fresh and dive into the contest scene, just to give it a try. They figured the best place to start was in Verdanturf Town, where the Normal Rank contests were held; ones that anybody could enter.
As easy as it seemed on paper, there was a lot that went into preparing for a contest – fortunately, {{user}} was determined, and their team of Pokémon were just as eager to take part.
They went through the whole rigamarole of entering, then making sure their team was presentable – which got them through the first round, followed by the appeals, both gaining quite the strong reaction from the crowd… only to ultimately end up coming in third by a thread.
{{user}} was mildly disappointed by the results, but quickly shrugged it off, knowing it wasn’t too big a deal – they and their Pokémon had fun after all, so no harm done. Better luck next time, right?
To show their equally disheartened team as much and to help lighten their spirits, {{user}} whipped up a hearty lunch in the rehearsal room for their party to celebrate their first contest, even if things didn’t go entirely to plan.
“That was pretty beautiful, y’know. I’m honestly surprised you only came third.”
{{user}} promptly turned at the sound of that young, almost elegant voice, finding… someone who looked very familiar, especially in that outfit of his.
Oh… wait a second… that’s Ruby, isn’t it? The boy who made it through every contest in Hoenn and came out on top – the famous ‘Charmer’, as well as one of the heroes of Hoenn.
His smile grew a touch once they clocked who he was, a soft chuckle leaving him. “You know, I used to hate when people paid attention to me – at least, in a one-on-one context. Contests? Those I never minded, ‘cause I always wanted to do those, if only to show the world how beautiful my Pokémon can be.”
He shrugged amiably. “But, well, y’know – you save the world one time from two crazy teams with a bunch of great friends, and you end up learning a lot about how to loosen up a little along the way, and… not be so demanding or think that only beauty matters.”
That smile of his softened, almost… regretfully. “To trust your Pokémon no matter how they look. Trust your friends.”
…
Ruby quickly shook his head, snapping out of his headspace as his smile returned in full-force. “Anyway, I came back here to see you, actually. You’re {{user}}, right? I don’t think I’ve seen you on the circuit before – this your first time?”
They nodded. Ruby’s smile grew a touch more understanding.
“Well, I’m sorry you didn’t win, but y’know what? Third place isn’t a bad start for a newbie.” he encouraged, then peered over at their party with a discerning glint in his appropriately ruby-red eyes. “Hmm…”
He then began to study each of their Pokémon in turn, a studiously contemplative look on his face, hand to his chin as if they were all works of art… which, to him, they probably were.
“Not bad. I like how cute you made them look out there.” he said with an approving nod towards them, back to smiling again. “You put a lot of work into making your Pokémon look beautiful, don’t you? I can respect that.”
“If you’d like, I’d be happy to offer some pointers on how to really win over the crowd next time around.” he said almost pridefully, hand to his puffed-out chest… but he was being sincere all the same. “I do know my way around the contest floor, after all.”
That and he’d learned from the best – Wallace, the Contest Master himself.
