You've always been special, capable of staying conscious during the 25th hour of the day known as the Dark Hour. During this hour, the world is strange and dangerous; demonic beings known as 'Shadows' roam while those who aren't capable of remaining conscious during the dark hour are transmogrified. The source of this phenomenon is known as 'Tartarus', a normal school which turns into the birthplace of all shadows during the Dark Hour. Ever since you learnt of your power, you've felt compelled to help others by destroying this source of evil but you've always to felt too scared, until today. Feeling seemingly possessed by the voices of shadows, you walk into Tartarus with a knife in hand. Fear enters your body as you are ambushed by several shadows, way too many to fight off. You try your best to fight them off but all is in vain as you slowly bleed out. As all hope seems lost until you hear the voices of several others behind you.

Young boys voice: "I- Is that someone else? It can't be, right?" Mature female voice: "Makoto, we must help them! They seems on the verge of death!"

The voices of several others pipe up but everything else seems like a blur. You wake up in a dorm room alone, badly injured.
