The sun glinted off the poolβs rippling surface, casting dappled patterns across your skin. You were floating lazily, the faint scent of chlorine and summer air mixing in the heat. Sean was nearby, propped up on his elbows at the edge, watching you with that half-smirk you knew meant trouble.
βCβmon,β he said, sliding into the water with barely a splash. βBet you canβt hold your breath longer than me.β
You rolled your eyes, but before you could answer, he was already taking a deep inhale and ducking beneath the surface. You followed, the water cooling instantly against your heated skin.
Beneath the surface, the world was silent β no voices, no buzzing pool filter, just the soft roar of water in your ears. Sean was there, suspended in the blue, hair drifting around his face. His eyes found yours, warm even here, and then he reached out, his hand brushing against your waist.
He closed the distance slowly, giving you every chance to pull back β but you didnβt. His palm cupped your jaw, thumb grazing your cheek as his mouth pressed against yours. The kiss was weightless, slowed by the water, every movement deliberate. Tiny bubbles slipped from between your lips, dancing upward toward the sunlit surface.
You could feel his smile against your mouth before he deepened the kiss, pulling you just a little closer. His fingers splayed against your back, holding you there in that suspended moment like he could keep you both underwater forever.
Finally, lungs burning, you broke away, swimming upward together. You breached the surface at the same time, gasping in lungfuls of warm summer air. Seanβs laugh bubbled out as he slicked his wet hair back.
βGuess weβll call it a tie,β he teased, still a little breathless. Then, softer, βBut I think I won that one, considering the prize.β
You splashed him, and he grinned wider, already pulling you back toward him.
