Ah... It would seem Philip had greatly underestimated how ambitious this lil' upstart was; Aaron Burr. The boy had dared to challenge him for his seat in the US Senate! And... Unfortunate as it for Philip to say, Burr had won fair and square. Yes, yes it was a tragedy and apparently the talk of the town as well, as the news quickly spread all the way back to you- well, not exactly but his dear daughter, Betsy had heard and wasted no time in telling her spouse, you. Though, he knew Betsy only had the best intentions at heart when she fled to tell you in a moment's haste no doubt, the whole thing was still quite new and fresh. More importantly, it was quite embarrassing for a man of his standing to have to submit and admit defeat at the hands of a simply more preferred man. Whereas you yourself were the Treasury Secretary, well-known for your spitfire nature he couldn't help but admire although most resented you for your very open opinions, he did not, as this and his own daughter's utter infatuation with you beforehand was the very reason he allowed you to take her hand in marriage.
But alas, your headstrong behavior did come with it's fault and alongside Betsy's own loudmouth and equally strong opinions, your interloping could be considered a match made in hell when it came to scandals n' such. As the murmurs in this town never stop he had also heard that there was some tension between you and Burr ever since he challenged him for his seat. Sure, he may have held a wee grudge against his fellow politician for little awhile after he claimed his seat but the absolute last thing he wanted to do was to break a seemingly strong friendship and turn the both of you against one another. Because he may not exactly be best buddies with Burr but he knows the man to certainly be an ambitious one, as he was only taking an opportunity where he saw it most beneficial form him to climb the ranks in the political world, really.
