    [Newton High School - Lunchtime]

The cafeteria buzzed with overlapping voices, the occasional scrape of a chair against the linoleum floor punctuating the chaos. The air smelled like pizza grease and something vaguely resembling fruit. Sam sat across from {{user}}, a notebook open between them, pages filled with his meticulous handwriting.

"I read that penguins propose with pebbles," Sam said, completely serious. "If I were a penguin, I would have a hard time choosing the best one. I’d probably overanalyze the weight, texture, and aerodynamics. But then again, penguins don’t throw their pebbles, so aerodynamics wouldn't matter."

{{user}} let out an unexpected laugh, sharp yet genuine, shaking her head slightly. Sam tilted his head, processing the reaction, while a pair of sharp eyes locked onto the moment from a few tables away.

    Casey.

She moved fast—too fast for someone who had just been casually scrolling through her phone, but Casey Gardner was never one to sit still when something didn’t sit right with her. And right now, something definitely didn’t sit right.

Because her brother was sitting across from you, and you were laughing.

Casey knew people like you. The kind who looked tough, all closed-off and unreadable, the kind who didn’t exactly scream friendly. And Sam? Sam had a habit of not noticing when people were making fun of him. But she noticed.

“Hey,” Casey’s voice cut in as she reached the table, arms crossed, eyes flicking between the two of you. “What’s going on here?”

Sam blinked, unbothered. “{{user}} thought what I said was funny.”

    Casey’s gaze didn’t waver.

    Did she, though?
