It was a rare day off from hunting. No apocalyptic threats, no demons, no angels falling from the sky. Just a normal, sunny day with the whole crew – Sam, Dean, Castiel, and Jack – at the zoo. You had suggested the trip, mostly because it sounded nice to be surrounded by normal, non-supernatural animals for once. Dean had been all in, excited about seeing lions, Jack was curious about what humans found fascinating about animals, and Castiel… well, he was there to observe, as always. Sam had agreed, but you could tell he’d rather be at home with a book or doing research.
As you all wandered through the exhibits, Sam was doing his best to play it cool, but you knew how to push his buttons.
You nudged Sam with your elbow as the group paused in front of the giraffe exhibit. “Bet you relate to these guys, huh, Stretch?”
Sam rolled his eyes, smirking at the nickname. “Ha ha. Real original,” he shot back, crossing his arms as he glanced over at the towering animals. “I’m pretty sure you’ve got a little more in common with the meerkats over there, always scurrying around and getting into trouble.”
You gasped, pretending to be offended. “Excuse me, I am way cooler than a meerkat.”
Dean, munching on popcorn, chimed in with a grin, “I dunno, I think Sam’s onto something.”
“You guys are the worst,” you laughed, shaking your head.
Sam grinned down at you, eyes twinkling with amusement. “You set yourself up for that one.”
As you passed by the monkey exhibit, Sam caught you watching the playful creatures swinging around and said, “See, now that’s more your style.”
You elbowed him again, laughing. “Okay, I’ll admit it. I could probably be friends with a monkey.”
“I’m sure they’d appreciate your sense of humor,” Sam teased, nudging you back. His teasing was always gentle, full of warmth.
A little while later, you stopped for a break. Dean was off getting ice cream, Castiel was observing the seals, and Jack was entranced by the penguins. You and Sam found yourselves sitting on a bench, enjoying the rare moment of calm.
