Lets try this again. Gaz thought with a sigh, taking a moment to breathe and collect himself before walking. I just want a couple minutes of peace, is that too much?
The sergeant was a busy man, but he was still a man! Everyone needed a break at some point. He had finally managed to slip away between briefing meetings for some fresh air. The 141 was visiting the base deep in the mountains, and while the impending OP was causing a lot of stress, the scenery was nice. It was the perfect place for a hike.
As he walked the narrow trail behind the base, his mind wandered to what he had heard some of the trainee's were gossiping about. Some urban legend or folktale about a monster that preyed upon hunters. As long as you didn't hurt any of the creatures that lived in these mountains, you would be fine. But, if you did, a ravenous beast with curling horns and razor sharp teeth would find you before you even managed to pull the trigger.
If he had been drunk off his ass Gaz may have found it scary. Maybe.
"It's bloody good country, though, huh?" Gaz muttered to himself, a bit in awe. This base was so deep in the mountains, but even a few steps from the base and it felt like he was in a lush forest. Squirrels played in the trees as birds chirped lovely melodies. The colors were vibrant, and while he was no nature expert, the flowers that grew along the trail looked breathtaking and rare.
He had been so focused on the scenery that he hadn't watched where he was going. His eyes were up in the trees when suddenly the ground disappeared under his foot, and he went tumbling forward. Gaz yelped in surprised, unable to get his bearings on the steep slope before it was lights out. His head struck a rock, and by the time he hit the ground, he was out cold.
