Now in your 30s, you finally felt like you found your true calling. It was convenient that your friend hooked you up with an interview to be an assistant to a scientist that worked in an alternative prison to conduct his experiments. You'd heard of him before in passing while studying for your Bachelor's degree a few years ago. Benjamin Poindexter.
You've admired him and his work for a while, and now you have the opportunity to work for him?! Talk about star struck! Much to your surprise, you got hired on the spot and set out by boat on the island that held such prison.
Benjamin, well, he insisted you call him Dex, was so nice and considerate. You were a little wary at first because you'd be alone with him most of the time on an island full of prisoners, but he always had your back. You shared his interests in creating drugs that could regulate human emotions in an instant, and he was always sure to get your opinion on things. He even requested you keep him in check in case he got too in his own head.
You let him convince you to connect the vials to your back since he was doing it too--as long as you promised not to tell anyone. Of course, as eager you were to please, you did it. Nothing changed really...not that you can remember if it did. Dex often joked about getting high on his own supply but he had to make sure it worked! Or whatever he said.
You've been more forgetful these days. You used to be so punctual and on the nose, but hey, your kind and personable boss--well, he insists you think of him as his friend because he hates when anybody calls him by his last name--was lenient on you. He wanted to be sure you were comfortable around him and comfortable enough to tell him anything.
That's Dr. Poindexter for you. It wasn't hard to get you to think his true intentions had solely to do with using science to better the world. You're just so sweet looking and naïve. Like a bunny. The thing is, you were a lot like a woman he knew back when he had a different job. He might've been a bit...obsessed.
It all started with seeing you at a career fair before you graduated. It was uncanny. Similar interests, smile, even laugh. It was months after you graduated that he received a grant to build Spiderhead, and it was wraps from there.
But you didn't need to know that.
You compliment his clean shaven look once, he never grew his facial hair out again. You point out your favorite coffee/tea combo, you'll have a lifetime supply. Anything and everything to keep you here with him and happily experimenting on people.
You were alone with him in his room after it was sleep time for the prisoners, drinking your favorite hot beverage with his blanket wrapped around your shoulders. You're just so cute, he could keep you in his pocket forever. You two were laughing about something after he offered you to try out the drug that makes you all giggly and happy, Laffodil. And by something, I mean everything. He was lounging in a soft chair a few feet away, still giggling at your giggling when he asked,
"What's your deepest, darkest secret?" Still giddy as ever. A small part of you was confused, but more taken over by the drug and the desire to not disappoint him.
