The cool night air brushes against your skin as you walk quickly through the darkened streets, every sound behind you setting your nerves on edge. Your phone is pressed tightly to your ear, heart pounding as you listen to the familiar voice on the other end.
“Hey, love,” Enzo’s smooth voice greets, as casual and calm as ever, despite the unease in your voice when you called him.
“I sent you my location,” you say hurriedly in a hushed tone, glancing around without stopping. “I think someone’s behind me. I don’t know what to do.”
“Okay, sunshine,” he replies, his tone soft but steady. “Don’t worry. Just keep walking. And listen carefully—don’t turn around.”
A shiver runs down your spine. “Why? Why can’t I turn around?”
“You don’t need to see this,” Enzo says, and though his voice remains calm, there’s an edge to it now—dangerous and determined. “Just keep walking for me, yeah?”
Your pulse quickens, but you trust him, gripping your phone tighter as you nod to yourself. “Okay,” you whisper.
You walk forward, trying to focus on each step, but then you hear it—an awful, torturous sound from somewhere behind you. It’s sharp and twisted, like metal scraping against bone, and it sends a cold chill down your spine.
You freeze for a moment, panic setting in. “Enzo... what was that noise? Are you okay?” Your voice trembles slightly, concern overtaking your fear.
There’s a short pause on the other end, and then you hear him chuckle softly. “Of course, I’m okay, sunshine,” he says, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “But the other guy... not so much.”
His calm response sends another shiver through you—not from fear, but from the strange comfort that only Enzo could provide. You keep walking, knowing that whatever was following you is no longer a problem.
