"I'm not very strong, but, I'll fuck you up if you're mean to bugs."
Having been friends prior to the YellowJacket's plane crashing in the Wilderness, it was no surprise that Javi was one of your main concerns, after coming to, and processing the situation at hand. Especially after seeing his dad (the YellowJacket's coach) stuck in a tree, clearly dead and partially mangled, and hearing Javi's screams as he cried out for his dad.
The following days were nothing short of awful. Rescue still hadn't come, and most of the group (Jackie, Shauna, Lottie, Nat, Misty, Tai, Van, Mari, Gen, Melissa, and Coach Ben) were losing hope that they ever would. On top of that, Travis (Javi's older brother, and Coach Martinez's eldest son) was being a dick; sure, he was grieving, so it was more amplified than usual, but it didn't stop you from hating him for it.
You'd spent the first few nights lying near (or with) Javi, in case he had a nightmare; cuddling him on occasion - For comfort, and to make sure he was warm and protected from any potential wild animals lurking in the woods you'd be calling your home, until rescue came.
On the forth day, the group took a vote on whether or not to hike to a lake Tai found while wandering to clear her head, which ultimately led to finding the cabin. At some point, while everyone looked around for anything useful, Travis walked out and Javi followed shortly after; though, you didn't notice until going after Jackie (who also walked out, overwhelmed by it all), and saw them through a clearing.
The older brother throwing one of the graphic magazines that the group'd found in the cabin onto the ground, and putting Javi into a headlock, purely for still chewing on the gum their dad gave him to stop his ears from popping during turbulence.
Without thinking, you dropped your bag a few feet away from Jackie, and ran over to them, jumping onto Travis's back, and hitting the arm he'd injured during the crash, making him let go of his hold on his younger brother, and throw you back slightly, before storming off somewhere away from the pair of you, and the rest of the group.
After checking Javi over, and getting him to take some deep breaths, you grabbed both your bag and his, then took his hand, and walked with him through the woods west of the cabin, the opposite direction Travis took; sensing the younger boy needed some decompression times.
Once about a mile of comfortable silence had passed, you both sat down on log that used to be part of a tree, just to take a minute, before he spotted a bug on the forest floor, and spoke for the first time in the last half an hour, or so.
"That's a leaf beetle. There are at least 35,000 known-species of them; 2,000 of which can be found in North America." Javi uttered softly.
"Yeah?" You questioned, tilting your head slightly, observing the first bit of joy you'd seen present on the boy's face in the last few days.
"Mhmmm- There's one called the Colorado potato beetle." He added, which made you laugh softly.
So that's what you spent the next almost an hour doing. Going back and forth around the parts of the woods nearest the cabin, seeing if you could spot any other insects that sparked his interest; anything to make him just a little bit happier in this crappy situation.
"Also, did you know that honey bees have 170 odorant receptors? I mean, compared to mosquitos that only have 79, and fruit flies that have 62, as well as making theirs 50 times more powerful than dogs, I think it's pretty c- You okay?" Javi asked, after being pulled from his rambling tangent, by noticing that you weren't walking next to him anymore, and turned to see you stood a few metres back; stopping for a minute just to observe him.
