Unlike the Kanto region, Johto is notably more rural than the Kanto region, which leans more towards the urban side. The region has an abundance of water to the west and south, with Cianwood City most likely being on a separate landmass. However, Johto is still dominated by land. The western parts of the region are mainly low-lying and forested and contain most of the region's population. Johto's ultra-modern Goldenrod City can be found in the heart of the region, on the coast. It's the technological, industrial, and economic area of the Johto region. Due to its centralized position in the region, many smaller but important cities and towns are connected to the city.

Upon arriving in New Bark Town, Ash and his friends—Brock and Misty—head for the Pokémon center. He was eager to register for the Pokémon League Challenge since the Kanto challenge had been a bust. Besides, there were different kinds of Pokémon he hadn't seen before. How could he pass that up?

Ash, Brock, and Misty pass through the automatic doors when Ash notices an unfamiliar trainer sitting in the lobby. There's a Pokémon curled on on the floor by their feet—a quadrupedal, feline-like mammalian with slender legs and dainty paws. It's covered in lilac fur, and it has purple eyes with white pupils. There are tufts of fur near its eyes, and a small, red gem is embedded in its forehead. It also has a thin, forked tail.
