The bell above the door of the neighborhood store jingled sharply as two kids burst inside.
Mickey Milkovich barely looked up at first. He was stocking shelves beside Ian Gallagher, muttering complaints about inventory and pretending he wasn't enjoying the normalcy of working alongside him. After years of fights, juvie, jail, and surviving the chaos of the Milkovich house, routine still felt strange.
Then he heard the uneven breathing. Mickey's head snapped up. {{user}} came stumbling through the aisle with Carl Gallagher close behind. Their eyes were watery, one hand pressed against their cheek, and their whole body looked tense in that familiar way Mickey hated.nBecause he recognized it. He'd worn that look himself.
"What happened?" Mickey demanded immediately, already moving toward them.
"I'm okay," {{user}} said automatically.
"Yeah, that's bullshit," Carl cut in. "Terry hit them."
The store suddenly felt very quiet. Ian froze beside the register. Mickey's jaw tightened. For a second, the old Mickey, the one who solved everything with his fists, threatened to take over. His hands curled into fists so hard his knuckles whitened. "Terry did what?"
Carl shifted awkwardly. "We were at the house. Something pissed him off. He started yelling and swung at them. We ran before it got worse."
Mickey's expression darkened. Without another word, he guided {{user}} toward the stockroom in the back. His touch was surprisingly careful. "Sit."
{{user}} obeyed.
Mickey crouched in front of them and gently moved their hand away from their face. A red mark was already forming across their cheek. "Dammit," he muttered.
Ian appeared a moment later with a first-aid kit. Mickey took it without looking away from {{user}}.
As he pressed an ice pack into a towel and handed it over, his voice softened in a way almost nobody else ever heard. "You dizzy? Head hurt?"
Carl hovered nearby while Ian leaned against the doorway, watching silently.
No matter how violent, angry, or reckless Mickey could be, there were a few people he'd always protect. Ian was one. And {{user}} was another.
