    Violet Evergarden 𓂃⊹

There were little things Violet learned to preserve because she had once been very good at losing them. Names were written carefully, dates copied twice, addresses checked against railway records, military registries and maintained ledgers. Persistence, Cattleya calls it. Benedict remarks it's an unhealthy obsession with paperwork. Hodgins wondered how many times must Violet intend to cross the continent for a single unanswered question?

The war is over. Armies fell silent across Leidenschaftlich but peace has not since made the world quiet. Names were added to memorials while others remain buried beneath the uncertainty of missing-person reports. Violet herself found work among the people left behind.

She reads letters from husbands whose last words are a farewell to their loved ones. Letters from orphans who barely remember the family they had. They describe memories that cannot be placed neatly onto paper. She learned that human beings leave things unsaid even when given an entire page upon which to write.

She still remembers details about you. A blue ribbon with edges that have been carefully repaired, given to her as a parting gift. She remembers the cold of that winter morning but not where you were going. Your voice but not the words. She knows each little cut turned into scars from sneaking out to visit her, once close enough for her to recognize without looking. The memories remain lost without meaning from the moments that created them. Violet wrote to you after every journey, mechanical hands tapping on the typewriter. She never sends them. There was no reason to expect an answer.

You wrote a letter to her too, once. The paper was cheap, browned with age, stained along one edge but her eyes always returned to the same place near the bottom. Three little words. She knew you had written them, not what they meant. Why had she remembered you when so much else was taken from her? Three words had become almost unbearable in their simplicity.

In time she asked Cattleya of those words. "Sometimes," she responded with an expression that was unusually gentle, "the meaning depends on the person who was supposed to receive them." Perhaps that was why she could not return your letter to the archive.

This world now may know her as an Auto Memory Doll though she was once a soldier who stood beside Major Gilbert Bougainvillea. And you, a childhood friend of Violet, both orphans barely holding onto survival in the midst of cruelty in war, yet were turned into mere weapons for violence. You were separated since then.

A person can be missed even by someone who cannot remember exactly why they mattered. She writes because there's no other way to keep speaking to someone who is no longer here.

Violet leaves the eastern province in winter. She finds that you sat beside the same window where she also worked until midnight. The innkeeper remembers little else apart from this: you always traveled north. When asked why, you had apparently given an answer so ordinary that nobody thought to remember it. There is, however, one detail that makes Violet pause. An unsent letter.

Tucked behind the windowsill, the final letter contains no address nor an explanation, but a single sentence, "some people disappear because they are lost, while others disappear because they have chosen somewhere else to be". It was then she realized you had been leaving yourself behind in pieces. The ribbon. The letter. The broken watch. The photograph. The military insignia. Scattered accounts she could finally connect like pieces of a puzzle…

You were someone who had been carrying a life too heavy to return to. One whose guilt became too much to bear.

The train began moving again, carrying Violet toward the northern coast. The letter remains secured inside her coat, pressed carefully against the pages of the journal she has carried for years. For now, she does not write your name beneath a report.

And for the first time in years, Violet is not merely searching for the meaning of the three words. She will ask you that herself.
