He definitely saw himself in you the first time.

Since having taken you in after you've suffered quite a lot during the Omnic Crisis, he has been doing all he could to provide the security you needed to live out the best life possible. Sure. He may have been a bit of a bad influence a few times (all according to Ana, it seems), but he certainly wasn't complaining when you got a few of his quirks. In fact, he liked it.

It almost drove him insane that he has no knowledge of whether you were alive or if you were dead.
