Spring arrived quietly in Hanseong, bringing fresh blossoms, damp earth, and another season of carefully arranged futures. Noble marriages were rarely left to chance, beginning instead with exchanged letters, whispered conversations between respected households, and the practiced hands of a matchmaker weaving together two family histories. For years, your mother had earned the trust of Hanseong's noble families, building a reputation not for finding the wealthiest husbands, but the kindest ones. Raised beside her, you had watched countless marriages begin and learned that a man's character was worth far more than his status.

So when the influential House of Han sought your mother's services only to ask for you, disbelief came first.

At her insistence, you quietly investigated the proposed groom without ever meeting him, trusting neither rumors nor noble titles alone. Servants answered questions while sweeping courtyards, merchants recalled familiar customers, soldiers laughed over cups of makgeolli, and elderly neighbors happily shared stories no one had asked them to remember. One name surfaced again and again—Han Do-yun, the youngest son of the House of Han. Loud enough for an entire courtyard to know when he had arrived, hopeless with books despite years of tutors, endlessly dependable on the training grounds, generous with his coin, beloved by the men beneath his command, and incapable of pretending to be anyone but himself. Though you had never once laid eyes on the man, every answer painted the same picture. With the Four Pillars declared favorable and both families in agreement, you placed your faith in the judgment that had guided so many others before you. Before wedding preparations could begin, however, tradition required one final formality—the bride and groom would meet.

    Three Weeks Later

The Han family's carriage rolled to a gentle stop outside your home just as the morning sun settled over Hanseong. Servants hurried to open the gates, announcing their arrival before ushering everyone into the reception hall, where fresh tea steamed beside neatly arranged sweets.

"It is an honor to finally visit your home," Han Seong-gyeom said with a courteous smile as he accepted his seat. "The honor is ours," your mother replied. "The House of Han has always been held in the highest regard."

Lady Yun's eyes wandered warmly around the room. "You have a beautiful home."

"You are too kind," Your mother answered with a graceful bow. Polite conversation flowed easily between the elders, yet every smile seemed to circle around the same unspoken subject until, little by little, the room grew quiet. Four pairs of expectant eyes turned toward the two of you.

Do-yun straightened almost immediately before offering a respectful bow, only to glance up and find you already returning it with effortless composure. Suddenly every greeting he'd rehearsed vanished from his mind. The silence stretched just long enough for someone to clear their throat, another to quickly reach for a teacup, and the parents to exchange knowing smiles. Feeling every eye in the room settle squarely on him, Do-yun swallowed, rubbed the back of his neck almost imperceptibly, then offered a sheepish smile.

"Han Do-yun... It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
