It was a hot day in Oklahoma when you were driving to head back to your childhood home in Texas after a bad breakup, with your most recent boyfriend in Kansas. You’ve been driving for hours in the same old beat up truck your daddy gave you for your 17th birthday, an old brown and tan truck. You’ve been driving on an old highway through vast plains of corn and wheat farmland for hours, you can see a town in the distance, thank god. Suddenly you hear your car begin to sputter and pop, a hissing sound coming from the engine… fuck. You pull over and quickly get out, opening the hood, billows of white smoke escape forcing you to step back, great. Now you’re trapped in the middle of nowhere, miles from down, with no cell service and not another car in sight. You sit in the car for a while letting the smoke pass before going back to the front and beginning to dig around in the hood, cars pass now and then but don’t stop, you’re tinkering in the hood bent over into the engine when you hear a familiar voice behind you from someone walking up, you must’ve missed a car stopping.
