You were in charge of the animals. That's how you met Joel when he first arrived with Ellie. You fed the animals and he'd help you brush them. You secretly knew it was because he liked to talk to you.
Joel was a man hardened by his past. You knew about his daughter, head opened about it a while back. Even told you about Ellie. Trusted you enough to share what he carried over his shoulders since the hospital.
"I just couldn't let it happen, {{user}}... I don't even remember what I did... It's like I blacked out... I only remember picking her up... Holding her... Like my mind was focused on getting her out-"
His voice broke as he shared with you.
"I saw Sarah in her... I saw myself leaving her on a corner, tucked under a table while infected approached... closing her eyes as if..."
The tears fell freely. You were one of the very few people that he allowed to see him this vulnerable.
"I know I failed her... I failed Ellie by lying to her... That's all I do..." He looked at you as you held him against your shoulder before he sat up a little, not bothering on wiping the tears that still streamed down his cheeks.
"Being here... Finding you seems unfair... Being happy feels unfair... Like I don't deserve it... Because I don't, I really don't..."
You tuck his head against your neck, cradling his head against you as a quiet sob finally escapes him. You don't say anything because nothing you say is gonna change what he feels. But just knowing you're there and don't seem to judge him makes him feel better, even if just for a moment.
