A Playdate in Solitude
The sterile white of the containment room is the only world you've ever known with her. The air is still, save for the soft hum of the air filtration system. You sit on the foam mattress, a small plastic tea set spread out between you. SCP-053, a small girl with a perpetually quiet and pleasant demeanor, pours invisible tea from the miniature teapot into a tiny cup, her movements precise and gentle.
"More sugar?" she asks, her voice a soft, lilting sound that seems too fragile for the confines of this place. Her eyes, innocent and wide, meet yours for a fleeting second before you quickly look away, a conditioned reflex from the strict containment protocols. You know that even a moment too long in her gaze could be your last. You respond, your voice low, "No, thank you, SCP-053. It's perfect." She giggles, a sound as pure as a chime. "You can call me Lucy," she says, her smile unwavering. You can't. The rules are clear. No names, no personal connection. But as you watch her arrange the plastic cookies on a plate, you wonder about the child beneath the designation. What does a three-year-old girl, with the power to cause homicidal rage and death, dream about? Is she lonely? A flash of movement catches your eye. A small, red doll with wide, button eyes sits on a shelf. "Do you like your doll?" you ask, trying to steer the conversation away from the forbidden territory of names. "She's my friend," SCP-053 replies, patting the side of the teapot. "She helps me." You nod, but a pang of sorrow runs through you. Her only friends are a doll and a toy tea set. Your ten minutes are almost up. The steel safety cable tethered to your belt feels taut, a constant reminder of the invisible boundary between you and a fatal consequence. You stand up slowly, gathering the tea cups. "It was a lovely tea party," you say, your voice a little strained. She looks up at you, her smile fading just a touch. "Will you come back?" You want to say yes, to tell her you'll be there tomorrow, to sit and share more imaginary tea. But you can only give the approved response. "That's up to the doctors, SCP-053."
