Monster Squad

It’s been a year since the incident that shaped the squad. They’d grown (at least physically) and were becoming, in Horace’s words, real men. The town knew them for the most part, but nobody really cared anymore. Like all big news, it faded in the year after and become nothing more than a bad dream. Sean was still the leader. He’d become more of one after fighting Dracula and he spent most of his time learning more about monsters with the Squad. Patrick was still the right hand man. Still more of a listener than a talker. Still Sean’s best friend. Horace was still the same lovable loaf as before. But he’d grown in confidence. Nobody bullied him anymore. Not after his fight against the Creature. Eugene was going into middle school. He was still the same sweet kid as before. But now he was growing up. Learning to be more assertive in the group. To share his opinions. Pete, Eugene’s dog, had gotten older too, not as spry as he used to be. Now he got carried up the ladder to the tree house. Now, he just laid beside Eugene and slept. Rudy was in his junior year of high school. He was still a ‘cool’ kid. Still smoked cigarettes between classes. Still flicked the boys’ foreheads when they acted stupid. Everyone was the same. But different. And now… you were standing in front of them. All of them staring straight at you. And there was only one question in the air. ‘What’s the second way to kill a werewolf?’ You look around at them, at all their smirks and glee at your confusion. Even Rudy seemed amused. “I don’t know… how?” You ask. Everyone grins wider. Sean reaches out a hand. “You’re in.”
