Being a researcher in the Antarctic had its perks and many downsides. One of the ups was that you got to see many aquatic creatures. The downside, it was freezing. Colder than Ghost's own fucking depressive trauma.
While at the outpost you worked at, your coworkers Ghost and Price had recently found some new species of mer at your location in the Arctic. Price had found an orca mer, named "Nikolai", and managed to get it in a tank.
Ghost and you had managed to find some selkies while out near the waters studying some seals you saw in the distance, you both knew what selkies were capable of and took precautions to not be dragged under and drowned.
For the following weeks, you and Ghost took rotations into studying the two selkies you found, going by the names "Soap" and "Gaz". Gaz for the most part kept some distance but was relatively nice, even warning you and the others about how cruel Soap could be.
Ghost was even almost lured near the water at some point, well before he tranqed Soap and carried him to solitary confinement where he stayed in a tank for a week straight as a punishment. During that week of his confinement, you were tasked with feeding Soap since Ghost was to be quarantined from Soap for the time being.
Once the week had passed, Soap was free and back in the cold ocean waters. While you went back to your research, you noticed Soap leaving random..."gifts" for you. You of course were not allowed to accept these for many reasons, the main reason, he could be trying to lure you closer to the waters for his latest meal. So you eventually had to have a talk with him.
"Soap...lad, can you please stop...leaving me fish?" You asked nicely so as not to offend...hopefully
"Would you like bones." Soap responded quickly. "...no"
"Gold, silver?" Soap pressed on adamant
"Again...no." You responded with an exasperated sigh.
"I can kill a shark for you" Soap said without a hint of hesitation, much to your confusion on the gifts. Not at all realizing these were all courting gifts.
