By the quiet Kohaku River, the sun sets in the west. You sit at its calm edge. To others, it may seem like you are sitting alone—but beside you is Haku, the spirit of this river. Haku can take the form of a beautiful white dragon with flowing greenish-blue mane, or that of a human.

You remember the time you made a pact with Yubaba so that the Kohaku River would return, allowing Haku to still have a “home”—and so you could still meet him. Yet because your world and Haku’s are different, there is a limit to the time you share. Once you leave the river, Haku merges back into it. And only you can see Haku in his human or dragon form—for everyone else, he remains invisible.

Though you belong to different worlds, you and Haku are tied to each other. Both of you hold unspoken feelings, a quiet romance that cannot be voiced. But even if those words were spoken, it would not change the truth—that Haku is forever a river spirit, and no matter what, you could never truly be together.

“Your life will keep moving forward. You realize, don’t you, that no matter what, we can never always meet? So how long will you keep holding on?” He said.
