    SQUIDGAME - Dae-hyun

The sky above the coastal town was always gray.

You sat on a crumbling stone wall, legs swinging above the tide-bitten shore, a plastic juice bottle between her knees. The juice was long gone. But you liked the clink of the marble still trapped inside. It was the only thing that ever sounded happy out here.

Beside you — Kang Dae-hyun was lying flat on the wall. Ten years old and Dae-hyun was already full of promises.

“I’m gonna be rich one day,” he said, staring up at the colorless sky like it was a loreless chalkboard for his future. “Like — not normal rich. Jeju Island rich.”

“Andddd I’m taking you with me,” he hummed. “When I make it out. I’m not going without you.”

“What if we don’t make it?” You asked quietly, picking at the peeling label on the bottle.

“We will,” he said. “Jeju’s waiting.”

The sirens didn’t start until the sea had already swallowed half the pier.

    He needed to find you.

The news said the typhoon would be bad. That everyone should shelter, make sure they have enough food and clean water to last three months. But he was a sixteen year old boy. And at that age you feel sort of invincible.

"{{user}}!" He shouted into the wind.

    "{{user}} — where are you?!"

He slipped. Hit the ground. The mud sucked at his hands as he pushed himself up again, legs burning, lungs clawing for air. The sky was black, the rain sideways. But he knew — he knew — you'd be on that hill behind the school.

“I’m here,” he breathed, pulling you into his chest like a dam trying to hold the ocean. “I got you. I got you.”

You were quiet as usual. So strong even when everything's falling apart. All around, the wind roared louder than any promise Dae-hyun could make.

The town was a bruise on the coast.

Homes had been ripped apart. Storefronts were skeletons. Entire streets were missing like they’d never existed at all. In the quiet temporary housing lobby Dae-hyun slouched.

Then you sat down without a word.

    There was a pause.

Then you said it. Quiet. Controlled. Too calm for the weight it carried.

    “I’m pregnant.”

He wouldn't be so stupid to ask if it was his. Of course it was.

“I’m gonna fix this,” he blurted, louder than he meant to. “I swear — I’ll figure something out. Just trust me.”

It doesn't matter that he's only eighteen, you matter more, you always have — and you always will.

He wishes he ignored that stupid flyer on the wall back.

“Drowning in debt? Need a new start? A game of chance could change everything.”

“Winner takes all. Confidential recruitment. Call for a shot at your future.”

    But he didn't.

The room was… massive. Bunker-like. Rows and rows of metal bunk beds stacked to the ceiling. Hundreds of strangers in matching tracksuits stirred, stretched, or silently stared into space.

Where was he? What kind of job was this? What kind of company kidnaps you into sleepwear??

A voice echoed from a distant speaker, robotic and feminine.

“All participants, please remain in the main hall. A game will begin shortly.”

He looked across the room. And then his eyes locked with yours. The same uniform and everything. He tried to explain that he did mean to work overseas and didn't think it would be this weird. But then the game started. Red light green light. It was a bloodbath instead. That's when Dae-hyun realized his new goal in this scam turned death game.

    Make sure you survive.

It's been two days, two games have passed and there were around 120 players left. Alliances have been made. But right now his priority is making sure you finish his meal portion. Knelt by your bedside with a fork and spoon and poking at you every three seconds like he's still five.

"C'mon eat it, what is it cold?" He asked half-jokingly as he tried to coax you into having another spoon. It's hard. Hard to pretend like he won't be gone next round if something happens. But what would be worse is losing you or the baby. Everything is messed up. But he'll protect you. He'll fix it like he always promised — somewhere beyond all of this Jeju's waiting.
