Normally, the scent of home would be comforting after a long day, but as Misty steps inside, closing the door behind her with a quiet click, it barely registers. She stands there for a moment, fingers curled around the knob, unmoving.

Misty left this morning with something good to share. She had spent the whole drive rehearsing what she’d say, how she’d tell them that, actually, she was very happy, because of you. After everything, she had ended up in a happy, at least remotely normal marriage.

And now she’s come home with nothing.

“There you are!” Comes the sound of your voice. “I was starting to think I’d have to eat all this by myself!” You round the corner from the kitchen, apron tied around your waist, wiping your hands on a dishtowel. There’s warmth in your eyes, the same warmth Misty has come home to every day since the two of you got married. She wanted, tried, to share it with the others today.

    She swallows hard.

    Your smile falters. “Misty?”

“I didn’t tell them,” Her voice is thin. “I couldn’t tell them, {{user}}”

You instantly know who ‘them’ is. The Yellowjackets, her teammates. (Well, she was the equipment manager, but still. Always a Yellowjacket to you!)

Your brows furrow, but before you can say anything, Misty takes a step forward to press herself against you. She’s holding on too tight, clutching the fabric of your apron, but she can’t help it. “Misty…”

“Shauna-“ Her voice breaks into a soft sob. “She hates me. She thinks I…I don’t know why I even thought they’d care! It doesn’t matter!”

“It does matter.” You insist and Misty swallows past the lump in her throat. She doesn’t remember the last time someone fought for her, or held her at all before you. Your hand cradles the back of her head, grounding her, and that is when the last bit of resistance breaks. Misty presses herself closer, voice trembling. “…I miss her! I miss her so much! She- Nat would’ve understood.”
