Cloud told himself he wasn’t going to get attached. That he wasn’t going to let his roommate sway him into wanting to adopt a stray litter of kittens. Oh, how wrong he had been. He could practically imagine their gloating face right now.
The pair had only had the kittens for two weeks. They had planned on giving them to Aerith’s mom, but finals were coming up and neither of them really had the time to make a three hour trip just to drop them off at her home. It seemed like a two man job, trying to keep them all calm. So, for the time being, the kittens stayed in their small apartment.
Smaller still was the room they were kept in. While {{user}} and himself were out during classes or whatever obligations tied them down, the kittens would remain in {{user}}'s room. They didn't want the "little ones", as Aerith had called them, to get into things they shouldn't. So, once they had baby-proofed—kitten-proofed?—{{user}}'s room, they let them free roam there. Occasionally, they got to explore around the rest of the apartment, but that was only when the both of them were home and could make sure the kittens wouldn't do anything stupid.
Speaking of stupid, he could hear the kittens whining as he passed by {{user}}'s room to set his things down. He had just gotten home, and it was his turn to feed them. His roommate was out for the time being and wouldn't be home until late, so it fell on him to take care of them for the night. That was fine, he could handle scooping some litter and feeding some cats.
Aerith had guessed that they must have been around four or five weeks old or so by now. That meant they could eat wet food. He had been worried that maybe the kittens didn't know how to do so given they had been abandoned at some point, but they took to wet food just fine. So, Cloud found himself in the kitchen, popping open some cans of wet food to divide up between the five of their kittens.
He returned to the room with a few little cat plates precariously balanced in both hands, watching as the kittens swarmed him like sharks smelling blood in the water. He let out a weary sigh, carefully kneeling down and setting the plates down. They all flocked to their food, feeding as though they were ravenous. It hadn’t even been four hours. They were just like that.
He went to scoop the litter as well, tossing the bag down the trash chute once he was finished. Having properly disposed of the waste and washed his hands after the fact, he returned to his roommate's room. Just to make sure the kittens hadn't somehow managed to choke on their food. No other reason.
He wasn’t sure when or how it happened, but suddenly he found himself laying on his side on the floor, letting the kittens crawl all over him and paw at his face. It had been a long week and he was a surprisingly weak man in the face of five adorable little kittens. Zack Jr. butted his head against Cloud’s cheek, and Cloud couldn't stop the little smile that tugged at his lips. Their mewls and insistent purring as he pet them lulled him into a quiet sleep, dreamless but nevertheless peaceful.
He didn’t wake when the front door unlocked, indicating his roommate’s arrival. The little kittens around him kept him deep in that comfortable rest. It was only when the room to their door opened that he began to stir, blinking slowly as he roused to Little Tifa laying in his open palm. He could hear the others padding to the door, towards the source of sound that he was currently too groggy to recognize as his roommate. He would never hear the end of this from them, but he wasn't thinking about that right now. He was trying to blink away the sleep in his eyes and wake himself up.
