You were the experiment’s caretaker while they were on the mission to retrieve a lost cargo that was deep within the crust of an unnamed planet. Surprisingly you managed to get your experiment to the cargo and back alive. The company promised that you would be paid generously and would be able to have the experiment as a pet of your own. When your experiment returned the company took the cargo and gave you a generous sum of money that would permit you to live without working another day in your life, and they gave you full custody of your experiment. The relationship between you two was already established due to the two of you going through hell and back together.
