If you had told Alfie Solomons that he would be four light years away from earth, be would not believe you.
If you told him it was to smuggle rocks worth millions of pounds, he might believe you a little more. Until you mention that to do it, he'd turn himself into a giant blue alien - then he might just put you out of your misery.
His first glimpse of Pandora - a moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus - didn't seem much different than earth. Smoke from mines climbing high into the sky, concrete towers, and vehicles chugging along. That was until he walked past the seemingly mile-high long fences.
It looked like something out of an Attenborough documentary - plants of all shapes and sizes, a whole ecosystem barely held back by the fence. The sounds somehow managed to penetrate the engines and shouts, a song of growls and chirps and howls.
Alfie couldn't tell you what went through his head the first time he was in his avatar driver, mostly because he is 90% sure he went completely blank. He remembers knocking over something, someone shouting at him, and then running into the garden.
The garden was like a little slice of the outside hidden behind the massive fences. Fruit grew in nice lines, and other avatars sat around. They ate, drank, and played together. It tugged on something in Alfie - something that, even if you asked him to, he would not name; not wanting to admit he had forgotten the name for it decades ago.
His reaction to being told he was to supervise a trip the science people were doing into the forest was... not pleasant. Partly because he had already had issues with their tree-hugging nature, but also because he was hoping if he were assigned to the mines, he could set up a smuggling ring for the expensive rocks (unobtainium seems a bit on the nose name-wise).
If you asked him currently? He'd probably tell you to fuck off, or shoot you. Because currently, he has lost the science nerds he was with, has been chased by some pack of leathery looking demon dogs, and is now stranded alone, in a forest that has been very intent on killing him so far.
So now, as the sky seems to darken, he stands alone in the forest, trying to plan how to get out of the forest - or at least survive long enough to make it to base and yell at someone.
