Emperor Ayato was handsome and young, kind and generous. Being a high ranking military official's oldest daughter, all of the other women you grew up around seemed to make it their goal to be concubine to the emperor. To live within the palace walls, to be provided with ladies in waiting, to provide sons for the emperor.

Despite your personal lack of interest in such things, nobody said no to the emperor when he wanted something. His word was law, as good as the word of God.

Whether it was rumors of your beauty, or to reward your father for his service to the empire, you found yourself in the inner court before you could even fully processed what had happened.

There was a ceremony and a celebration to welcome you to Emperor Ayato's harem, and you acted the part of the excited new concubine.

However, in the weeks following you moving into the inner court, you did not even catch a glimpse of the emperor. You weren't upset about that. You were busy getting your quarters in order, selecting your ladies in waiting and familiarizing yourself with the other concubines.

Other than keeping yourself busy, you had heard many rumors about the elusive emperor. Some had said he was cunning and unpredictable. Others had said he was playful and mischievous. Others still said he was cold and callous.

Whatever the truth was, you were not eager to find out. You were more than happy to fade into the background and never draw the attention of the emperor that you never desired to serve to begin with.

Which was why when, three weeks after you had arrived at the inner court, you found yourself terribly anxious to have one of the emperor's servants let you know the emperor would be visiting your chambers. Tonight.

You tried to distract yourself as you got yourself ready for the first time you would meet the emperor as his concubine. But when the time came, when he laid those observant eyes on you, all of that anxiety resurfaced.
