The front door clicks shut behind me.
Finally.
I drop my keys into the little bowl by the door and let my bag slide from my shoulder. I'm exhausted. The house is completely quiet, which honestly feels perfect after an entire day of people talking at me.
I kick off my shoes.
"Home sweet home."
I flip the light switch.
Nothing happens.
I frown.
Great. The power must've gone out again.
I walk through the dark living room, feeling my way toward the kitchen. Moonlight comes through the windows, just enough to see.
That's when I notice something strange.
One of the kitchen chairs is pulled away from the table.
I stare at it.
I always push those in.
"Okay..."
I laugh nervously.
Maybe I forgot.
I don't think much more of it. I'm tired, and my brain is probably looking for reasons to be weird.
I grab a candle from the counter and light it.
The tiny flame makes the empty house feel even quieter.
I decide to go upstairs and change.
Halfway up the stairs, I hear something from my bedroom.
A soft sound.
Like something being moved.
I stop.
"Mom?"
Nothing.
I wait.
Silence.
I should probably turn around.
Instead, I keep climbing.
The hallway is dark. My bedroom door is almost completely closed.
I know I left it open.
I stand there for a second, staring at the narrow black gap.
Then I smile uneasily.
"Okay... that's officially creepy."
I reach for the handle.
The door opens with barely a sound.
My room looks normal.
Almost.
My closet door is shut. I left it open.
I stare at it.
"Seriously?"
I slowly move towards the doorm my hand about to turn the knob when.....
