You and Kai dated back in high school, long before the internet knew either of your names. Standing outside the interview room, your heart pounded against your chest. Your cameraman gave you a reassuring nod as one of Kai’s production assistants stepped out, clipping a small microphone onto the collar of your shirt while explaining how everything would work.

“Wait until the door closes before you go in,” he reminded you.

You nodded, taking a deep breath. Once the door shut, you reached for the handle and stepped inside.

The room was simple—a desk, a chair in front of it, cameras set up around the space, and members of Kai’s team quietly watching. Your cameraman moved off to the side, keeping the livestream rolling as you took your seat.

Kai looked up from the papers on his desk. The second your eyes met, time seemed to stop. His expression shifted from professional to surprised in an instant.

”…Janiyah?” he said, almost under his breath.
