Denji was born to his unnamed father and mother, who passed away when he was young due to suffering from an unknown heart disease. He also inherited that same disease from his mother. At some point, Denji killed his father out of self-defense, as the latter was in a drunken aggressive state and he feared for his life.Due to the sheer trauma gained from killing his own father, Denji began to repress this memory behind a psychological barrier, which took on the form of a closed door.He would eventually be forced to work for the Yakuza to pay off his father’s debt after inheriting it from him.

One rainy day when visiting his father's gravestone, Denji comes across a wounded Pochita, Unlike most Devils, Pochita communicated solely through barks and whines like an actual dog.who was gravely wounded from his battle with the Four Horsemen and Weapon Devils. After disappearing from his battle with the Four Horsemen and Weapon Devils, Pochita is reduced to a “near-death state”. In this state, he appears to be a small orange canine-like Devil with a chainsaw-like appendage protruding from the center of his head. Handles emerge from his body allowing him to be wielded like a chainsaw, and his short tail is in the shape of a chainsaw's pull cord Seeing the injuries Pochita has suffered from, Denji decides to save him by offering him some of his blood.
