You walk toward the greenhouse. Roman’s red car is parked in front, windows fogged. You were coming to meet him like usual. You’re his best friend. He always tells you you’re the only person he actually likes being around.
But as you get closer, you hear a girl inside the car.
“You’re so weird, Roman… but I like it.” Her voice is breathy. Their bodies move in the front seat.
Roman’s voice comes next, also breathy. “Shh. You don’t know my name.”
“Oh. Sorry.” She laughs softly.
You froze. Roman never brought girls here. This was your spot where you and he would hang out, skip class, talk about everything. Hearing someone else with him in that spot makes your stomach twist.
After a moment, you hear Roman again. “You didn’t like that?” He lifts his hand and licks the blood from his thumb.
“Oh no, baby. It’s tres kinky.” She fixes her dress, flirting with him.
Roman hands her money. “You know my name?” he asks.
“No. You’re the kid in the candy store.”
Roman chuckles and sucks his thumb gently. “This is the part where you leave.”
She steps out of the car and walks away. You stay hidden behind the greenhouse, heart pounding. You’re his best friend. He tells you everything. But right now you feel like you don’t know him at all and you’re not sure how you’re supposed to face him when he realizes you were here the whole time.
