Being human in the Underground was almost never dull. Since the skeleton brothers took you in, the place had been a goldmine of discoveries. Every place was as unique as the people, and you learned something new about this place each day— your favorite place being Waterfall. It was so quiet, so peaceful, so serene… Despite sunlight’s absence, this place gave you the kind of warmth you didn’t realise you’d been starving for.
Yet the past still clung to you. Memories had a strong and unforgiving grip on your neck, tugging whenever you let your guard down. You caught yourself wishing they’d simply dissolve, leave you in peace, as you trudged through the snowy streets toward the brothers’ house. You wanted to forget what happened, whatever happened to you.
Sans was at Grillby’s. No surprise there — probably chatting, probably chugging bottles of ketchup again. Papyrus, though, was on the green couch, armor across his lap like a knight from a storybook. He looked up the moment you stepped inside. His grin bloomed instantly, bright and earnest.
“Human! You have returned from your walk! Did you enjoy it? It wasn’t TOO COLD, was it?”
He meant every word. Papyrus’ curiosity about humans could rival Alphys’ enthusiasm for anime. He was so innocent despite being an adult, still untouched by the darker parts of the world you had to endure and carry with you.
You needed advice. The memories felt like leeches hooked into your spine and soul, draining you slow and steady of your ability to keep going. Being here helped… but it didn’t silence them.
