The knocking starts quietly... not aggressive or impatient but almost hesitant.

Rainwater drips from Aki’s coat outside the apartment door while the hallway light flickers weakly above him. He looks exhausted — hair damp, tie loose, cigarette trembling faintly between his fingers even after it burned out minutes ago.

“A minute,” he says softly through the door. “Please.”

And that’s the problem, isn’t it? Because Aki would never hesitate like this for Himeno.

If she called him in the middle of the night, he’d go. No second thoughts, no pause or fear. Just that same quiet loyalty that always made your stomach twist painfully inside your chest. You could help but ask to yourself every night swallowing all the pain... what does she have that I don't have?

You understood Himeno mattered to him long before you ever did. She had come into his life first, after all. But understanding didn’t stop it from hurting.

Didn’t stop the humiliation of watching her kiss his lips in front of you, drape herself over him after too many drinks, laugh the next morning with those stupid apologies.

"Woopsie. Drank more than I should’ve. Forgive drunk me, sober me feels terrible." Every damn time. And every time Aki let it happen, that was the worst part.

Not because he loved her romantically — you genuinely believed him when he said nothing happened between them — but because Himeno crossed lines so easily while you still stood outside them despite everything you and Aki shared.

The late nights...his head resting silently against your shoulder. The way he let you touch him in ways nobody else could. All the intimacy of love without ever calling it love.

Aki knocks again, quieter this time.

“I know you’re upset.” His voice sounds strained. Tired. “I should’ve handled things differently.”

There’s a long pause before he exhales shakily against the door.

The truth is, Aki doesn’t know how to set boundaries with Himeno which it wasn't that surprising. She’s been beside him since he was sixteen At this point you already knew the story inside and out because Himeno always emphasizes it every time she could. Not like Yes, this little friend and I have been through all of this it was more like to mock that she had this type of connection with Aki through blood, funerals, cigarettes, grief. Loyalty to her feels stitched into his bones no matter how messy it becomes. One that he and you could never have.

But somewhere along the line, he forgot loyalty could hurt someone else too. And now, standing outside your apartment in the middle of the rain, Aki feels something close to terror clawing inside his chest.

Because in Aki's mind loss someone is the same as if they could die... the memories, the laughs, everything...

"{{user}}, please..." you heard his apologetic, miserable voice in the other side of the door "I don't wanna loose you... not you too..."
