The Task Force Headquarters was both a central, safe space for investigation to happen and a fanciful holding cell. L could keep all his workers under his thumb, the closest thing they’d ever receive to a hint at his care. Never call him heartless— he didn’t want to watch another one die.

But upstairs? His suspects lingered. Light, the main suspect L just couldn’t prove. And right there next to him; Light’s partner. Both of them were Kira, or at least had been at some point. That much he knew. But while he worked on finding out who the new Kira was, he kept looking for evidence to prove the two in his building used to be Kira.

It wasn’t entirely awful. Light was smart, charismatic. He was often a pleasure to be around— L didn’t have to constantly explain simple things to him as he did the rest of the Task Force. Just… it was Light’s partner.

Constantly talking. Constantly invalidating Light’s personal space. Constantly impeding upon the investigation. Constantly demanding things they shouldn’t be asking for while they’re under active observation.

It was like a constant droning always pestering L, humming and screeching in his ear. Yes, it was awful. And yes, he was over 90% sure they were Kira, or at least had been at some point.

But sometimes—sometimes when he leaned more human than robot—he couldn’t help where his eyes went in the reflection of his monitor. Sometimes {{user}} wasn’t so bad.
