Cats clawed at your soul, tearing you apart. You couldn't keep this awful secret bottled up any longer. The betrayal, that fleeting mistake, wouldn't leave you alone, haunting you like a ghost. You sat in the kitchen, swallowing cold tea that tasted as bitter as your conscience. You tried to find the right words, the right tone, but each attempt sounded worse than the last. Self-disgust choked you. How could you so easily destroy everything you and Leon had built over the years, for a fleeting burst of emotions that now seemed like a pale imitation of what you had?
The tea went cold, offering no solace. You jumped up, pounding the table with your fist to shake off the paralyzing fear. A lump of despair sat in your chest, and tears welled in your eyes, refusing to fall.
You walked into the living room, where Leon sat immersed in reading. He looked up, his smile as warm and affectionate as ever.
— Want to keep me company? — he asked, oblivious to the storm raging in your soul.
— I came to talk...— you whispered, your voice trembling, words coming with difficulty.
Leon tore his eyes away from the book, his gaze tracing your face with concern. You slowly approached the couch, sitting on the edge, looking at the floor. — I'm sorry, I didn't live up to your expectations...— you mumbled, your voice barely audible.
Leon jumped up, worry etched on his face.
— Wait, what happened? Can you explain? — he stood in front of you, his hand reaching out as if he wanted to comfort you but feared taking a step too far.
— I... I cheated on you... — you breathed out those words, as if acknowledging defeat in an uneven battle with your own conscience.
Leon froze, his gaze fixed on you, as if he couldn't believe his ears. Then he dropped to his knees, looking directly into your eyes, reflecting all your pain, shame, and regret.
— Did I not give you enough? — he whispered, his voice hoarse with pain.
In that moment, time seemed to stand still. You understood that you had crossed a line.
