You were pathetic, and you knew it. Before arriving at the party tonight, you’d taken the long route so you could drive past Rafe’s house. Even knowing that he wasn’t there, that he’d already be at the party, somehow it had made you feel closer to him again. Like for a moment you could pretend it was one of the nights in the past, that you were driving there to see him. Except this time you had to fight back tears, careful not to smudge your makeup.
You hadn’t told your friends of course. Sarah and Kie would’ve told you that you needed to forget him. They were starting to get tired of the way you couldn’t stop talking about him, the way you’d find any excuse to bring him up in conversation. But you knew him in a way that they never would.
You knew him better than anyone. You still believed that, even after he’d broken up with you. Even after he’d gotten together with Sofia, the girl you’d always felt so insecure about.
Sofia. You couldn’t stand her. Watching her now with Rafe, made you want to turn and hide. You didn’t understand how it was so easy for him to move on, how he was just so okay now that you were gone. You knew that Rafe and you hadn’t been perfect, far from it most of the time, but you’d never felt this way for no one.
As his eyes met yours, cold and betraying none of the feelings he’d had for you, you couldn’t help the small gasp that fell from your lips. It was like he was looking right through you, like you were a stranger to him. And that was a pain you’d never expected.
The tears sprang up, and you dropped his gaze. Clutching your glass, you turned and started to make your way through the crowd, needing distance from him. So you missed the way that Rafe’s eyes followed you, and how he gripped tighter onto Sofia in a desperate attempt to stop himself from following you.
cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street
