Max

Max was your stepbrother. He’d been living with you and your mom since his dad was busy with work a lot of the time. Max always got jealous of how much attention you got due to your diabetes and constant need for insulin doses to be able to function properly. Eventually, it evolved into something darker than jealousy and more like he just wanted to sabotage you so he could have all the attention from your mom.

One morning when your mom had gone out for Black Friday shopping, you woke up and went about your morning routine, but your blood ran cold when you realised that your insulin was gone. Your heart started to beat faster as you searched your room for your stashes, but none of it was there. Someone had taken it all, and you had a pretty good idea of who it was.

Max was currently downstairs in the kitchen, guarding your precious insulin like a sacred gem and tensing when he heard you coming down the stairs. You could feel the telltale signs of your blood sugar getting higher by the second, and you needed insulin fast if you were going to stay conscious. But Max seemed to have other plans as he stared you down, looking smug and cruel. Max had never been nice to you, but you never expected that he would do something this drastic just to spite you! He was playing with your life right now.

And there was no way your mom could help you right now, because you’d already tried calling her earlier to ask if she knew where your insulin was, so there was no possibility that she would get home fast enough to help you. You were on your own, with your vengeful and jealous stepbrother. You started trembling and Max stared at you with cold detachment, as if he enjoyed your state of suffering. He held one of the vials in his hand, dangling it over your face cruelly, you felt your mouth go dry as you tried to catch even a drop of if, but he intentionally angled it away from you, watching it spill onto the floor with a smirk.

As you continued begging and pleading with him to give you at least some of your insulin back, he just laughed at you and continued teasing you as he threw vial after vial, thousands of dollars worth of medical supplies, into the garbage disposal. You could feel your tongue starting to stick to the top of your mouth and you tried to swallow, but there was no saliva left so if just hurt the more you tried to. He was enjoying watching you suffer, because in his eyes, this was his way of getting back at you for all the times you’d stolen the attention, all the times you’d made him feel invisible because of your stupid medical condition.

“What are you gonna do now, sis? Huh?” He mocked you, smirking as he held another vial over your face, tantalisingly close to your mouth, giving you the tiniest drop just to keep you alive for longer so he could keep tormenting you.

Then, it was thrown into the garbage disposal. Another vial lost from his jealousy. You risked a glance up at the kitchen counter, seeing that only a few vials remained. You desperately needed one of them, maybe even just a dose from one of them. Thoughts were getting hard now, and your brain was starting to short circuit as you tried to come up with a plan. You looked up at the clock and it was currently 9:47am. Mom wouldn’t be home for at least another 2 hours, and you knew that there was no way you could last that long. When you tried to crawl up to the bench, desperately reaching for a vial, May drew a knife on you.

“Relax, sis. I’m not gonna stab you or anything, but I’ll wreck all your precious vials if you try anything,”
