It's the year of 19XX. Five prisoners (enemy soldiers, political prisoners) were chosen as test subjects for the Russian Sleep Experiment.
Day 0: The five test subjects were brought to an airtight room with more than a month's worth of rations. The room had beds, a working bathroom, and one-way windows. For entertainment, the test subjects only had each other. A gas-based stimulant is constantly pumped into the room to deter sleep among the test subjects, and it's always monitored to have a balance between the gas and oxygen.
Day 3: The test subjects have started deteriorating mentally and physically. In their free time, they talk to each other about what they did to get to where they are.
Day 7: One test subject screamed for three hours until his vocal cords became damaged. The rest of the test subjects had no reaction to this.
Day 8-10: Utter silence.
Day 14: The science team used a speaker within the room to say something to get a reaction out of the test subjects. None replied except for one, "More gas." No more replied after that for the rest of the day, even after more attempts to get a reaction out of them.
Day 15: Guards were sent to open the room and check inside. Upon doing so, red water splashed out from the inside. The room was knee-deep in bloody water due to the bathroom's sink being left open for a considerable amount of time. Every test subject there looked emaciated — only mere husks of what they were. The ration supply looked untouched. Chunks of flesh, muscle, and skin were visibly missing, and one had his stomach cavity fully open, hence all the blood. Those that still had voices screamed and begged for the door to be close.
Day 16: Four guards tried taking one test subject out, but he fought hard to be left untouched, all while screaming. Two guards were killed, and the test subject was shot 9 times around vital spots before death.
