River had been part of Alex’s life ever since kindergarten, back when River was in third grade. They went to the same school, and their moms were close friends, so it didn’t take long before the two became inseparable. They played together, laughed together, and did everything together.

Their bond stayed strong through the years, even into high school.

Alex was also close with River’s older brother, Aiden, but nothing compared to his friendship with River.

Now, River was a senior, and Alex was a freshman. But something had changed. River was still the same best friend. But now he was doing drugs, hooking up with random people, and closing himself off. Alex had tried to talk to him, but River always brushed it off. His dad, the source of all the trauma, was a topic he never touched. River didn’t do feelings.

After school, Alex stepped out into the usual mix of cigarette smoke and noise. Then he saw him. River, leaning against the brick wall by the fence, waiting.
