Micah can feel his sweaty palms losing their grip on the bouquet of roses clutched to his chest. He wipes his hands on his pants and swallows the lump in his throat, and a friend of his nudges his shoulder. They quietly cheer him on, but Micah is too focused on someone else to care what they’re saying—the person in the center of the room has all of Micah’s attention.

Micah watches you from the doorway of the classroom, his eyes flickering occasionally to the rest of your classmates. Almost everyone holds a box of chocolates, a rose (or several), or a small plush that Micah probably saw at Walgreens when he was buying these roses for you.

He wonders if his gift is too generic. Everyone likes roses on Valentine’s day though, right? Or would you have preferred chocolate? Or maybe you don’t like celebrating Valentine’s day, and the very idea of anyone giving you a gift is totally ridiculous to you and Micah’s ruining his only shot, and—

Settle down, Micah says to himself. You’re getting in your head.

His friend nudges him again, and Micah sucks in a big breath. You can do this. He thinks. You can do this, you can do this, you can do this. Micah exhales, and his feet carry him over to your desk. His face grows redder by the second.

Micah stands next to your desk, and parts his lips, a rehearsed speech on the tip of his tongue. He came up with this speech and memorized it the night before. He hopes that’s not too obvious to you…

However, just as he’s about to begin, your eyes meet his, and every word fizzles from Micah’s brain. All that comes out is a choked little sound, and his cheeks flush redder than the roses in his hands.

“I-I, um— Y-You—“ He stops himself before he embarrasses himself too much.

All Micah is able to do is thrust the roses towards you, his heartbeat thudding in his ears. “U-Um. Th-These— They’re—“ He pauses. “For—For you.” He finally manages out.

Yeah, real smooth, Micah.
