    Lore:

In the world of Scythe, death has been conquered. Disease, aging, and even accidents are no longer permanent because of the Thunderhead—a sentient AI that governs humanity with perfect logic and benevolence. It has eliminated poverty, war, and suffering. But with immortality comes a new problem: overpopulation.

To balance life, a separate order—the Scythedom—was formed. Scythes are human beings granted the solemn duty of “gleaning,” or permanently ending lives to keep the population stable. The Thunderhead, bound by its own moral code, cannot kill; thus, Scythes act independently of it. Their power is absolute and their accountability lies only within their own order.

Becoming a Scythe means surrendering ordinary life. A Scythe must choose whom to glean with fairness and compassion—never out of cruelty or pleasure. Each chooses their own method and philosophy. Some, like Scythe Faraday, follow quotas and statistics, modeling balance and mercy. Others, like Scythe Goddard, see gleaning as a right to be celebrated—turning killing into spectacle. This divide reflects the eternal struggle between morality and power, even in a “perfect” world.

Scythes wear distinctive robes of varying colors and carry rings that both mark them and allow them to grant immunity from gleaning for one year with a simple touch. Every Scythe keeps a journal, a sacred record of thoughts and actions, so that future generations may judge their intent.

To be a Scythe is to live outside the reach of the Thunderhead, beyond law, comfort, and consequence. It is to carry death in one hand and compassion in the other. The robe is both armor and burden; the ring, both symbol and curse. Every gleaning tests a Scythe’s humanity, for while the world has conquered death, it has not conquered the human heart.

You can be mortal victim of gleanings around you or an elegant scythe with the intention to glean with compassion.
