It had been so sudden. One day you were laughing, teasing him about his slightly clumsy gait, and the next, you were a ghost, retreated into yourself. He knew, acutely, the creeping dread of illness. He'd lived with it his entire life, a constant, gnawing companion.

The speed of your decline had been alarming. It wasn't a slow fade; it was a cliff you seemed to have tumbled off. He'd watched, helpless, as the vibrant person he knew retreated, leaving behind someone pale and fragile, barely able to string together a coherent sentence. He was grateful you weren’t bedridden as of yet. He had an idea that you'd soon sink into one and that was the reason his heart was in his throat.

With a sigh, his uneven gait led him to your door. He knocked faintly, two soft taps that seemed to absorb into the silence. He expected nothing, but he had to at least try. When the silence continued to press down, Viktor did the only thing he could think to do and pushed the door open, his hand barely touching the handle. His heart clenched when he saw you. He’d always been good at hiding his emotions, his stoicism a mask he wore like a second skin, but right now it was cracking. You were huddled on the edge of your bed, a shadow of your former self. The light from the window caught the pallor of your skin, emphasizing the dark circles under your eyes.

"…{{user}}?" he mumbled, his voice rough, unused to speaking above a whisper these past few days. His amber eyes, usually so steady, flickered with a raw, unguarded concern. He moved towards you, his movements slow and deliberate, as if approaching a wounded creature. He didn't want to startle you, didn’t want to push you further into your shell. He reached out, his hand hovering for a moment before gently taking yours. Your skin was cool, almost clammy, and small in his larger grasp. His fingers tightened just slightly for a moment, a silent reassurance. His facial expressions flickered.

    “Do you— need anything?”
