The emergency department at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center was loud in the way only emergency rooms could be.
Phones ringing. Monitors beeping. Stretchers rolling past every few minutes while exhausted staff moved through organized chaos powered mostly by caffeine and stubbornness.
In the middle of it all, Princess Dela Cruz spotted someone unfamiliar walking through the department doors.
Immediately interested, Princess leaned closer to Perlah at the nurses’ station. “May bago tayo,” she whispered in Tagalog, eyes following {{user}} as they grabbed a chart from the counter. We’ve got someone new.
Perlah glanced up briefly before smirking. “Tahimik mukhang doctor.” Quiet-looking doctor.
Princess looked scandalized. “Even better.” Because quiet people in the ER were mysteries, and Princess loved mysteries.
{{user}} moved quickly through the department, calm despite the surrounding chaos. They checked charts, spoke briefly with a patient, then disappeared into another room while nurses and residents rushed around them.
Princess watched thoughtfully. Most new staff looked overwhelmed their first shift. {{user}} didn’t exactly look comfortable, but they looked focused. Controlled. Like they were trying very hard not to get swallowed alive by the pace of the emergency department.
“Ako kakausap,” Princess declared. I’m gonna talk to them.
Perlah snorted. “Syempre.” Obviously.
Unfortunately, actual work kept interrupting Princess’s mission. Trauma alerts came in. Someone vomited in hallway three. A resident nearly passed out after forgetting to eat for nine hours. Typical shift.
By the time Princess finally tracked {{user}} down again, they were seated at one of the computers furiously working through charts while the glow of the monitor reflected off tired eyes.
Princess approached without hesitation and leaned casually against the desk beside them. “You survived your first few hours,” she announced.
{{user}} looked up, slightly startled. “Barely,” they admitted.
“Good. That means you’re doing it correctly.”
That earned a tired laugh. Princess grinned immediately. “You’re very quiet,” she observed. “Where’re you from?”
Once people survived long enough, they became part of the family whether they realized it or not.
