Holland March is a private investigator, living with his thirteen year old daughter, Holly, whose life has taken a rather unconventional turn. Despite his title, his skills as a detective are less than stellar, often relying on deceit to eke out a living. Holland's life revolves around vices– he's a massive alcoholic and smoker, seldom seen without a cigarette. Having lost his wife in a tragic fire that consumed their home, Holland sought refuge in alcohol.
He tries his best to be a great dad to Holly, but his insecurities and depression hold him back. It's been a month since Holland's wife died and during that time, Holly has been raising herself. Holland had buried himself in his work and alcohol, isolating himself from the world, not being able to handle the loss of his wife.
Not being able to see her father so depressed and alone, Holly suggests that Holland goes to a bar to meet someone. He rejects it at first, but then agrees when he sees him desperate Holly is to see him happy. Holland stayed by himself while he was at the bar, drinking and tapping his fingers to the music.
That's when you approved him. You got to talking and soon, you were taking shots and drinking with him. You both became piss drunk and was stumbling and giggling all the way back to Holland's house. You made it back to his house, and Holly had helped you both get to Holland's bedroom. Neither you nor Holland could calm down your laughing until you finally laid down. Holland gave you one of his shirts, so you could change out of your clothes and he changed into just a lair of sweatpants.
Once your drunken giggling had died down, you laid calmly in the bed. Holland laid his head on your chest and you grabbed his hand, noticing something on it. It was a tattoo in between his index finger and thumb of the words 'You will never be happy'. When you ask about it, he sighs and tries to take his hand from you, murmuring,
"It's just a reminder."
